Tanzania is a fascinating safari destination, a must-visit country for every safari-goer. The most known tourist zone is the Northern Circuit due to its main attractions, including Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Kilimanjaro. Tanzania’s western corner is an unspoiled piece in the country. It is home to two parks; Gombe and Mahale.
Gombe Stream National Park is nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. It is the smallest national park in the country. Its major attraction is the large population of the eastern chimpanzees. The majority of the primates are habituated to human visitors, thanks to the pioneering work of Jane Goodall, who spent decades doing research. Exploring the chimpanzee is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for every safari-goer.
Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Gombe National Park
You will be picked up from your hotel in Dar es Salaam. You will be transferred to the airport for your trip to Kigoma. Upon arrival in Kigoma, you will be transferred to the Kibirizi Port for your scheduled boat ride to Gombe. Enjoy a hot lunch and go for an evening chimpanzee trek in the forest.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Gombe
Enjoy an early breakfast at the lodge. Prepare all the required gear and hear a short brief about the trek. At 6:30 a.m., the hike will begin through the forests, up hills, and into valleys. Visit the Kakombe Waterfalls, after observing the chimpanzees. You will also explore other parts of this forest such as Jane’s Peak. Enjoy dinner and overnight at your accommodation.
The chimpanzees live in groups of up to 30 individuals. These primates have a high degree of intelligence. They use simple tools to dig roots and hunt small animals. The young chimps are playful. Watch them chasing each other around their mother.
Apart from chimpanzees, other primates exist in Gombe. They include olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, and red colobus monkeys. There is an impressive bird count in this park. There are beautiful insects too.
Day 3: Gombe to Kigoma
