Mount Meru is a breathtaking peak in the northern part of Tanzania. Rising high to 4,566 meters above sea level, this stratovolcano is the second-highest peak in Tanzania. Hiking this stunning peak is one of the safari experiences you should miss on your next Tanzania adventure.

This program covers 4 days of hiking through scenic trails to the Socialist Peak. The tour will include a transfer from and to the airport. Here are the details of the program.

Details of the program

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

You will depart early in the morning from your accommodation in Arusha or Moshi. The Momella Gate is 3 3-hour drive from Moshi and a 1-hour drive from Arusha. Upon arrival at the gate, you register at the park office. Afterward, you meet with your guide, porters, a chef, and game ranger. The hike begins through the forested slopes of Mt. Meru. You will pass through the Ngarenanyuki River up the montane forests. There are abundant animals on the lower slopes and the armed ranger is there is protect you. You may see buffaloes, warthogs, antelopes, and others. Finally, you will arrive at the first camp, Miriakamba Hut. Enjoy hot washing water, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

After a hot breakfast, we start the hike. This day’s hike is short but very steep. You will view the Mount Meru Crater and Ashy Tray as you hike up a steep trail. You will arrive at Saddle Hut at lunchtime. We eat lunch and push again for another milestone to the Little Meru (3794 m). You will enjoy the sunset and return to Saddle Hut overnight. Sleep early to prepare the body for the summit attempt that will begin shortly at midnight.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut

A friendly wake-up call will get you up at around 0:30 a.m. Enjoy some bites and hot coffee. You will start the final and much-awaited hike to the Socialist Peak. You will hike through Rhino Point (3800 m), and Cobra Point (4350 m), and then cross the ridges of Mount Meru’s crater. The hike will continue until we reach the highest point of Mount Meru.  From there, you can see Mount Meru Ashy Tray, Mount Kilimanjaro, Momella Lakes, etc. After you enjoy a lot at the peak, we then begin our descent from the summit to the Saddle Hut for a little rest and lunch. We then continue our hike to Miriakamba Hut where we rest and enjoy our last dinner on Mt. Meru.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

After breakfast and enough rest following long hours of hiking, we descend from Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate. You will meet our driver and you hit the road to your accommodation in Arusha.
