6 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climb

Marangu is the oldest route. It is also known as the Coca-Cola route. It has a gentle inclination. It has high summit success rates and superb accommodation of huts and dormitory lodging style. You can reach the summit within five days. We highly recommend six days to acclimatize before reaching the summit.

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by our representative. After warm greetings, you will be transferred to your hotel in Moshi. After checking in at the hotel, you will relax at your lodge. Dinner and an overnight stay will follow.

Day 2: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Pick up from your hotel and drive to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you will meet the crew, including porters and a chef. After clearing up with the park officials, we will begin our hike. The first day’s hike will be through the rainforest until you arrive at the first camp, the Mandara Hut.

  • Habitat: Montane Forest

Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, we continue hiking through the montane forest and emerge into heath and moorland zones. The hike is long but rewarding. You will view the town of Moshi and the two peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro. We will stop on the way to open our lunch box. Afterward, you will arrive at Horombo Hut. Enjoy a hot dinner and sleep well.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Mawenzi Hut

After breakfast, we hike to Mawenzi Hut and return to Horombo Hut. This day is for acclimatization to get your body ready for the summit attempt. Lunch will be at Mawenzi Hut and return to the Horombo Hut. You will see beautiful zebra rocks as you hike on this trail.

  • Elevation: 12,200 ft 15,100 ft to 12,200 ft
  • Elevation Gain and Loss: 2,900 feet
  • Hiking time: 6–8 hours
  • Habitat: Heath Land

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today, we leave Horombo Hut and hike through the heathland past a saddle joining the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. We arrive at Kibo Hut and start the preparations for the summit attempt. We check the equipment for the last time. You will enjoy an early dinner and sleep early in preparation for the summit attempt.

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

The hike begins at midnight. You will hike through a steep inclination through Gilman’s Point (5685 m), Stella Point, and finally reach Uhuru Peak. Enjoy the views of glaciers and craters at the summit and take photos as you wish. You will then start the descent to Kibo Hut for a much-needed lunch. You will then descend to Horombo Hut.

  • Elevation: 15,400 ft to 19,340 ft to 12,100 ft
  • Distance: 4 km ascent, 14 km descent
  • Hiking Time: 10–15 hours
  • Habitat: Artic

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

This is an easy hike. You will descend through the rainforest. Gaiters and trekking poles may be of importance here. Hike to the Marangu Gate to collect your summit certificates. Congratulations on your great achievement. Pick up from there and transfer to your accommodation in Moshi.

  • Hiking time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Rain Forest
