The Southern Circuit is the perfect alternative to the famous Northern Circuit. This safari zone is less visited, hence, much of its wilderness is unexplored. In this tour, you will explore three stunning destinations: Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous), Ruaha National Park, and Mikumi National Park.
Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Nyerere
We pick you up from your hotel in Dar es Salaam and hit the road to Nyerere National Park. We drive for 6 hours on a comfortable safari vehicle. We arrive at lunchtime. After lunch, we enjoy canoeing in the Rufiji River. As we paddle, you might see crocodiles, hippos, and birds. We then return to the accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Nyerere is the largest national park in Tanzania spanning 54,600 square kilometers. It is pristine and unspoiled. Common wildlife includes zebras, wildebeests, hippos, warthogs, and giraffes. The big games like lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalos are also abundant. You may also see hyenas, cheetahs, crocodiles, and African wild dogs.
Over 450 bird species have been identified in Nyerere National Park. You may see broad-billed roller, white-headed vulture, white-fronted bee-eater, palm-nut vulture, African spoonbill, Bohm’s bee-eater, white-backed night heron, and Spur-winged lapwing.
Day 2: Nyerere National Park
Today, we spend a whole exploring the wilderness of Nyerere National Park. We start the day uniquely with a morning drive. Breakfast at the campsite, followed by an afternoon game drive with a packed lunch. Picnic at a designated place.
Enjoy the views of the greater kudus, elephants, buffalos, zebras, wildebeests, and more. You might be able to discover bird species, butterflies, and reptiles. Nyerere is picturesque for photographic safaris. Always get your camera ready for capture. Dinner will be provided at the camp, and you will have a relaxing overnight stay.
Day 3: Nyerere to Mikumi National Park
After breakfast, we depart from Nyerere to Mikumi with a packed lunch. We explore the Mkata Floodplain for a day with a picnic lunch. Dinner and overnight at your accommodation.
Mikumi is a great wildlife spectacle in Tanzania. It spans 3,230 square kilometers. It is home to a diverse population of wild animals and birds. You can spot buffalos, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, elephants, and various antelope species.
Day 4: Mikumi to Ruaha National Park
Wake up and eat breakfast. Today, we leave Mikumi for Ruaha National Park. We enjoy canoeing in the Great Ruaha River to see hippos, crocodiles, and birds. Afterward, we explore the lush forests on a guided tour. Dinner and overnight at your accommodation.
Day 5: Ruaha National Park
This day is set aside for exploring the Ruaha National Park. Ruaha is home to about ten percent of Africa’s lions. It spans 20,226 square kilometers of area hence the second-largest national park in Tanzania. It hosts the highest population of elephants in East Africa. The Great Ruaha River is at the heart of this park.
There is a great concentration of wildlife in Ruaha, including the greater kudu, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, leopards, and many more. There is a great concentration of birdlife too. Over 500 bird species have been recorded.
Day 5: Ruaha to Dar es Salaam
After breakfast, we hike the Ngalambulwa Mountain. Enjoy the sunrise while standing at 1600 meters above sea level. While on this peak, you can explore the landscape of Ruaha. In the afternoon, we leave Ruaha National Park to Dar es Salaam. The journey is 630 km long taking around 8 hours. You will be dropped off at your accommodation or the airport.
