7 Days Machame Route and Zanzibar

Details of the program

Day 1: Arrival Day and transfer to Moshi

Soon after arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our expert guide will meet and greet you. You will then drive from the airport to your lodge in Moshi. After check-in, you will be given a short brief and an inspection of the equipment. Enjoy a scrumptious meal and sleep overnight as you prepare for the coming day.

Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

You will leave your lodge in the morning and drive to Machame Gate. We follow the customs with the officials before starting our hike. Porters will prepare the packs and our journey will begin. We will hike through the gentle-sloped lower foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro until we reach the first camp, the Machame Camp.

Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After a buffet breakfast, we leave the glades of the rainforest and ascend a little valley in the moorland zones. We then climb a ridge covered with heather before the route turns west. We then hike across another ridge and finally hit the Shira Camp where we rest, dine, and sleep overnight.

Day 4: Shira Camp to Lava Tower, then to Barranco Camp

After breakfast, we continue our push to Lava Tower (15,190 ft) and then descend to Barranco Valley. Another hike will get us to Barranco Camp. On this day, we will encounter two junctions. The first junction connects to the peak of Kibo while the second connects to the Arrow Glacier (16,000 ft). This hike is meant for acclimatization purposes.

  • Hiking time: 5-6 hours
  • Habitat: Semi-desert

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

On this day, we continue hiking until we leave the semi-desert and enter the alpine desert. We ascend a steep ridge and cross the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley campsite. Here, we relax eat dinner, and sleep overnight. The hike is too short for acclimatization purposes.

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

We hike from Karanga Camp and pass the junction to the Mweka Trail. We then continue the hike to the Barafu Camp. At this point, we have completed the South Circuit. We will camp early at Barafu in preparation for the summit attempt that will start shortly at midnight.

  • Distance: 4 km.
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 07: Barafu Camp to Summit, then to Mweka Hut

  • Elevation: 15,300ft – 19,345ft (and down to 10,000ft)
  • Distance: 5 km ascent/12 km descent
  • Hiking time: 7-8 hours ascent/4-6 hours descent
  • Habitat: Arctic

We wake up at 23:30 and do all the preparations. At around 2 a.m. we continue with the final ascent to the summit. We pass Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, then change our direction to the northwest towards Stella Point (18,600ft). Our trek becomes very challenging physically and mentally. We will be taking frequent but short rests to gain energy to finish our trek. Wonderful sunrise as you hike through the snow towards the Uhuru Peak. You are now stepping on the roof of Africa.

From the summit, we start our descent to Mweka Hut. We stop at Barafu Camp for lunch and then continue to Mweka Camp. We enjoy our last dinner and overnight sleep at this camp.

Day 08: Mweka Camp to Moshi to Zanzibar

  • Elevation: 10,000ft – 5,400ft
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

This is the last day and it is very easy. We will descend through the rainforest. Gaiters and trekking poles may be helpful if the lower down of Mt. Kilimanjaro is muddy. At Mweka Gate, we collect our summit certificates and continue our hike to the Mweka Village where a vehicle will be waiting for us. You will be transferred back to your lodge in Moshi.

At your lodge, take time to prepare for your scheduled flight to Zanzibar. Our guide will pick you up at the airport. Upon touching down in Zanzibar, you will check in at your lodge or resort.

Day 09-11: Relax in Zanzibar

After a breathtaking experience of climbing Kilimanjaro, your feet are probably tired. For the next three days, you will relax on the stunning beaches of Zanzibar. There are a lot of activities to do in Zanzibar that are meant for relaxation. From exquisite beaches to historical towns, Zanzibar is a paradise for relaxation. Here are some of the things to do on your three-day stay in Zanzibar:

  • Spice tour
  • Safari blue
  • Beach holidays
  • Swimming with the dolphins and sea turtles
  • Visit Stone Town and other historical sites
  • Snorkeling and scuba diving

Day 12: Departure

On this day, you will depart from Zanzibar to your country. We are thrilled to be part of your Tanzanian adventure from the first day to the completion of your safari.
